- Description: Estimate your body fat from three tape measurements using the US Navy method for men. It comes with a real error margin, shown honestly as a range, and is best used to track change over months. Nothing is stored.

Measurements

cm in

Height, waist, neck. Waist at the navel, neck just below the larynx, tape snug and level, measured after breathing out.

Estimated body fat

21 % body fat estimate

This is a rough equation result, not a measured percentage or a personal error range.

◷ Your waist-to-height ratio is the number with guideline backing.

This uses the classic US Navy circumference equation for men, the 1984 formula that online calculators still run. The Navy itself moved to a waist-to-height screen in December 2025 and no longer measures the neck. The equation is free and repeatable, and it is only an estimate. Tested against a three-compartment laboratory model it carried a total error of 5.2 percentage points across that sample; [the US Navy method explained](https://verinourishmen.com/muscle/body-fat-percentage/)sets out where that figure comes from and what the Navy measures now. Total error cannot be converted into a personal plus-or-minus range, so the calculator reports the equation result without false precision. It is also weaker at tracking change than it is usually sold as: in 926 male army recruits it registered a 2.2% fall in body fat across eight weeks of training where DXA measured 3.3%. Measure the same way each time, and read months rather than weeks. For deciding whether your body composition is a health problem, the [waist-to-height ratio](https://verinourishmen.com/tools/waist-to-height-calculator/) is the better-supported number, and [belly fat](https://verinourishmen.com/symptoms/belly-fat/) explains what it is measuring. If the figure is moving in the wrong direction with age, what protects the other side of it is covered in [muscle loss with age](https://verinourishmen.com/muscle/muscle-loss-with-age/). This tool is information, not medical advice.

MethodClassic US Navy circumference equation for men (Hodgdon and Beckett, 1984), using waist, neck and height. It is no longer the Navy's own assessment: [Guide 4, December 2025](https://www.mynavyhr.navy.mil/Portals/55/Support/Culture%20Resilience/Physical/Guide-4%20Body%20Composition%20Assessment.pdf)screens on waist divided by height and calculates body fat from waist, height and weight. Total error against a three-compartment laboratory model: [Moon et al., Dynamic Medicine, 2008](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18426582/). Its behavior over a training block: [Foulis et al., Frontiers in Physiology, 2023](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37351259/). Version 1.2, revised 29 August 2026: labelled as the legacy equation after the Navy replaced its assessment. Version 1.1, 10 August 2026, softened a tracking claim that ran ahead of the evidence.

## How it works

Enter height, waist and neck. The tool applies the US Navy circumference equation for men and shows the estimate as a range.

## The formula and sources

It uses the Hodgdon and Beckett equation developed at the Naval Health Research Center in 1984: body fat percent equals 495 divided by (1.0324 minus 0.19077 times the log of waist minus neck, plus 0.15456 times the log of height), minus 450, with measurements in centimetres. Evaluated against a three-compartment model in one small sample of men, it had a standard error of about 4 percentage points and total error of 5.2\. Those are sample-level performance statistics, not a personal plus-or-minus interval.

## Assumptions

- You are an adult man.
- Tape is snug, level, and read after breathing out.
- Waist is larger than neck, or the equation cannot resolve.

## Limitations

This is an estimate from three tape measurements, not a body-composition scan. Its value is in tracking change over months with the same tape and the same technique. For a health judgement, the waist-to-height ratio has guideline backing and this number does not.

## When to see a doctor

If your waist has grown steadily, or your waist-to-height ratio is 0.5 or above, ask for blood pressure, HbA1c and a lipid panel rather than another body-fat estimate.

## Frequently asked questions

### How accurate is the Navy body fat method?

Against a three-compartment model it had a total error of 5.2 percentage points in one small sample of young white men. That statistic summarizes the sample and cannot be used as a personal plus-or-minus range.

### What is a good body fat percentage for men?

There is no single agreed cut-off, which is why this tool does not invent one. Use the waist-to-height ratio for the health judgement and this estimate for tracking direction.

### Why do I need my neck measurement?

The equation uses the difference between waist and neck as its estimate of trunk fat, since the neck changes little as body fat changes.

### How often should I measure?

Every four to six weeks, same tape, same time of day, same person measuring. Weekly readings mostly capture measurement noise.
