Your BMI
26.8 kg/m²
OverweightBMI is a quick screening number, not a diagnosis. It cannot tell muscle from fat, so a well-muscled man often reads as overweight, and it says nothing about where you carry weight. Waist measurement tells you more about the fat that matters. Treat this as a starting point for a conversation with your doctor, and see our guide to muscle loss with age for the body-composition side of the number.
How it works
Enter your height and weight, and the tool returns your body mass index and the category it falls in.
The formula and sources
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared, or 703 times pounds divided by inches squared in imperial units. It uses the World Health Organization categories: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 healthy, 25 to 29.9 overweight, and 30 or above obesity.
Assumptions
- You are an adult.
- BMI is used only as a quick screening number.
Limitations
BMI cannot tell muscle from fat and says nothing about where fat sits. A well-muscled man often reads as overweight, and two men with the same BMI can carry very different amounts of visceral fat. Waist measurement tells you more.
When to see a doctor
If your weight has changed without explanation, or you are losing muscle and strength, see a doctor rather than acting on BMI alone. Our guide to muscle loss with age covers the body-composition side.
Frequently asked questions
Is BMI accurate for men?
It is a rough population screen. It uses only height and weight, so it cannot separate muscle from fat or show where you carry it.
Why is my BMI high if I train?
Muscle is denser than fat, so lean, strong men often read as overweight. This is a known limit of the number, not a health verdict.
What is a healthy BMI for a man?
18.5 to 24.9 in the WHO categories. Read it alongside your waist measurement and your blood results rather than on its own.
What is a better measure than BMI?
Waist circumference, or waist divided by height, tracks the fat around your organs more closely, which is the fat linked to heart and metabolic risk.
